CANTON — Several St. Lawrence County parents who experienced the loss of their children from online dangers will speak to parents as part of “Xander’s Story” on May 5.

Shane and Sondra Worthley will speak about the tragic loss of their 12-year old son, Xander, and raising awareness about dangerous online challenges.

Xander Worthley was a seventh grade student at J.M. McKenney Middle School in Canton who died in March.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 5th at 7 p.m. at Canton Central School and is for parents’ attendance only.

“Sondra and Shane Worthley feel strongly about sharing Xander’s story. As hard as it will be for them, they also feel passionately about spreading awareness about the dangers of online challenges. They take solace in knowing, by doing so, they could potentially be saving lives and families from experiencing the grief they’ve felt since March.” said Alexa Backus, Youth Bureau Director.

Other speakers include Rosemarie Maneri and Mary Rodee who endured the losses of Shylynn Dixon of Lisbon and Riley Basford of Potsdam last year to suicide. The Department of Homeland Security’s Outreach Coordinator, Juan Adames, will present online safety and measures parents can take now to protect their children.

“We are honored to be able to host Xander's Story at Canton Central. As a school community, we are grateful for the Worthey family's strength and openness and for all of the other families who will be represented that evening in an effort to raise awareness and help keep our young people safe. We hope you will be able to attend or take the time to watch the recording of the event to strengthen your ability to communicate with your children about these topics,” said J.M. McKenney Middle School’s Principal Joe McDonough.

Parents and guardians, in St. Lawrence County, are encouraged to attend.
