Massena police warn residents about 'ghost number' phone scam

MASSENA — Massena police are warning residents via social media of a possible phone scam in which a scammer was able to ghost a local number from US Custom and Border Protection, calling an individual about an alleged arrest warrant in their name.

The scammer alleged packages were intercepted in Mexico containing drugs with the individuals name on them.

Police say the call was then allegedly transferred to the U.S. Marshall Service, who subsequently asked questions and claimed an arrest warrant was issued for the individual.

Police say the scammer then ghosted a Malone Police Department number and claimed an arrest warrant was issued for the individual’s arrest.

Police urge residents to never offer personal information over the phone.

Police also warn that no law enforcement agency will ever call to inform individuals of a pending arrest warrant against them.
