MADRID – The Scotch Presbyterian Church of Madrid, was founded 200 years ago by forty Scottish settlers.
This 200th anniversary will be celebrated at a special worship service on July 21 at 1 p.m., with a reception to follow.
The Scotch Church officially organized as the First Associate Reformed Church of Madrid on Sept. 17, 1819, with missionary preacher, Rev. William Taylor.
A frame building was erected near the corner of Ridge and Buck Roads in the town of Madrid. In the 200 years since its founding, the Scotch Church has held worship in four different buildings.
By 1837 the influx of more settlers from Scotland had swelled the congregation to 370 and by 1847 a frame church was built on the location of the current Church in Chipman.
In 1864 this was replaced with a brick structure, and in 1888 a storm took the roof off the building. Plans began for its replacement, and from 1889 to 1890, the current building was constructed, complete with beautiful stained glass windows.
Weekly services are held at 10 a.m. each Sunday.
