Veteran Troy Josephs (Whitby, ONT) scored twice on Senior Night as the Clarkson University Hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with 12th-ranked Cornell before 3,061 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday.
With two games remaining in the regular season the Golden Knights stand at 14-13-5 overall and are in sixth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 9-8-3 league mark. Clarkson takes to the road for its final regular-season games playing at Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend.
By gaining the one point against Cornell (17-6-4, 12-4-4), the Knights have clinched a home-ice berth in the conference first-round playoff series for the fourth consecutive season.
Clarkson outshot the Big Red 31-26 and killed off all five of Cornell's power-plays, including one late in regulation that carried into overtime. The Knights went 0-of-4 on the man-advantage, including a power play of their own in the extra session. Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) made 23 saves.
Clarkson held a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes, but Cornell tallied twice in a four-minute span midway through the third period to take a 3-2 lead.
Josephs, however, came through with his second goal of the night with 2:18 remaining in regulation. Stationed in front of the crease, Josephs tipped in a blast from the blueline by classmate, defenseman James de Haas (Mississauga, ONT) for his team-high 12th goal of the season to force overtime.
Cornell took the opening lead of the contest at 9:12 of the first when a shot from the point by Jake Weidner found its way through traffic in front and past a screened Kielly.
Clarkson came back to tie it at 16:11 with a goal by freshman Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE). Junior defenseman Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT) started the play with a pass up along the boards to freshman center Nico Sturm (Augsburg, German), who skated around a fallen Big Red defender and feathered a pass across the crease to Brosseau, who knocked in is seventh goal of the season.
The Knights grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the second on a great individual effort by Josephs, who stole the puck from a Big Red defender at center ice and wristed in a shot from the top of the left circle at 3:38.
Cornell took the lead with goals by Mitch Vanderlaan and Matt Nuttle at 12:47 and 16:45, respectively in the third period.
Mitch Gillam posted 28 saves for Cornell.
