OGDENSBURG -- The headstones of Joseph York and his wife Lavinia have been re-set and refurbished with the assistance of three organizations.

Joseph York served as St. Lawrence County undersheriff for three years and sheriff for four more.

A celebration and formal dedication will be held on Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. by the For La Presentation Association with the Ogdensburg Historical Commission and Forsyth’s Rifle Reenactment Organization. The three organizations assisted in the project of the headstones located on State Hwy. 812.

A dedication of the new Pomeroy Legions and Lore sign will also take place on Sept. 18. The sign was placed in the cemetery in honor of York and his wife.

He also served as the county representative in the New York State legislature for three years.

He was also involved in the establishment of the first volunteer fire department in Ogdensburg.

York defended Ogdensburg twice during the War of 1812, manning an artillery position during two attacks.
