Spooky story slam

CANTON — The TAUNY Center is hosting Tales of the Haunted North Story Slam on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6-8 p.m. Organizers welcome family-friendly spooky stories, songs, and poems with a tie to North Country life, lore, and landscapes. Participants are invited to submit their name and the title of their work at the beginning of the event. Each piece should be restricted to about 5 minutes. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.

Haunted house fundraiser

COLTON — The Adirondack Park Paranormal Society will hold its annual haunted house charity fundraiser at Colton Fireman's Field, 385 Hanson Rd. on Oct. 6, 7, 13 and 14 from 6-10 p.m. or later. In previous years the organization has raised funds for a local child’s extensive medical bills for her cancer treatment, the Potsdam Snack Pack Program, and recently the Town of Colton’s food pantry and community center. This year the group is helping to raise funds for the Colton Volunteer Fire Department to aid them in purchasing a new ambulance. The first weekend will be a more child/family friendly haunted house. The second weekend will be an all out scare house for adults in honor of it being Friday the 13th weekend. Cost at the gate: $10 (ages 10 and up), $5 for first responders with valid ID, free for children younger than 10.

CANTON — To honor the last month of TAUNY’s Inhabited Arabesques exhibit of metalwork by James Gonzalez, the Metal Arts Day workshop will be Saturday, Oct. 7 from 12-4 p.m. at the TAUNY Center. Four metal artists – James Gonzalez, Kathy Lahendro, Margaret Jacobs, and Justin O'Rourke – will present different metals and techniques. Rossie ruins tour

ROSSIE — St. Lawrence County Historical Association, and historian John Austin, will host a tour of the historic factory ruins of the hamlet of Rossie on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. Covering about a mile, the tour begins in the hamlet of Rossie, located on County Route 3 at the junction of County Route 8. Good walking shoes are required to fully view all stops, as some of the ruins are located across uneven ground, such as along the riverbank and through fields. Highlights of the tour include the remains of the grist mill (1825), iron foundry, and machine shop (1840s); site of the iron furnace (1813); David Parish's land office (ca. 1812) and his house (ca. 1810); site of the lead smelter on the river (1838); and the Victoria Lead Mine stack (ca. 1830s, pictured). Aromatherapy workshop in Potsdam

POTSDAM — A “Sniffles & Sneezes Aromatherapy” workshop” with aromatherapist Kathy Wilcox will be held Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. at Potsdam Public Library. Learn how to use holistic aromatic supports to help tackle the coughs, sniffles, sneezes, aches and pains that often accompany cold and flu season. You will learn about essential oils that can be especially helpful this time of year, as well as safety guidelines for children and adults, and how to use these oils most effectively. You will have the opportunity to create two inhaler blends, or "sniffy sticks" to take home with you.

Anthropology lecture

POTSDAM — SUNY Potsdam will welcome the visiting scholar Dr. Catherine M. Cameron, professor emerita of anthropology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, for a public talk on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m., in the Raymond Hall eighth floor lounge. Her talk, "Captives and Culture Change in Ancient Small-Scale Societies," is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities Faculty Development Program. Haunted house fundraiser

COLTON — The Adirondack Park Paranormal Society will hold its annual haunted house charity fundraiser at Colton Fireman's Field, 385 Hanson Rd. on Oct. 6, 7, 13 and 14 from 6-10 p.m. or later. In previous years the organization has raised funds for a local child’s extensive medical bills for her cancer treatment, the Potsdam Snack Pack Program, and recently the Town of Colton’s food pantry and community center. This year the group is helping to raise funds for the Colton Volunteer Fire Department to aid them in purchasing a new ambulance. The first weekend will be a more child/family friendly haunted house. The second weekend will be an all out scare house for adults in honor of it being Friday the 13th weekend. MASSENA — Fellow photographers can learn how to use camera lenses to the best advantage when taking photographs awith photographer Konstantin Tovstiadi. He will present his talk at Nicandri Nature Center on October 14 at 10 a.m..The presenter uses Zeiss/Nikon as the example, but the lens talk applies to all photographers using manual lenses. It is open to all levels of photographers. The program is free. No registration is required.
