Highway to Horror opens

MASSENA — Highway To Horror, a 20,000-square-foot haunted walk thru attraction located at the St. Lawrence Centre Mall in the old Bon Ton Store, will be open Fridays and Saturdays in October starting Friday, Oct. 13. Proceeds will help support Massena Little league. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the last ticket being sold at 10 p.m. Tickets are $15 dollars and we do offer group discount rates for 10 or more people. Honoring Our Earth

Sakokwenionkwas (Thomas Porter), a member of the Bear Clan of the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne, will present the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address and offer a traditional teaching story. Fiddling with Traditions

POTSDAM -- A "Fiddling with Traditions" concert with fiddler/composer Gretchen Koehler and pianist Daniel Kelly will be held Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Potsdam Public Library.Fiddler Gretchen Koehler and jazz pianist Daniel Kelly blend dance fiddling with the lyricism of jazz. Haunted house fundraiser

COLTON — The Adirondack Park Paranormal Society will hold its annual haunted house charity fundraiser at Colton Fireman's Field, 385 Hanson Rd. on Oct. 6, 7, 13 and 14 from 6-10 p.m. or later. In previous years the organization has raised funds for a local child’s extensive medical bills for her cancer treatment, the Potsdam Snack Pack Program, and recently the Town of Colton’s food pantry and community center. This year the group is helping to raise funds for the Colton Volunteer Fire Department to aid them in purchasing a new ambulance. The first weekend will be a more child/family friendly haunted house. The second weekend will be an all out scare house for adults in honor of it being Friday the 13th weekend. Cost at the gate: $10 (ages 10 and up), $5 for first responders with valid ID, free for children younger than 10.

MASSENA — Breezy Maples Farm, 331 Willard Road, Massena is again hosting its annual “After Dark” haunt on Oct. 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28 from 7-10 p.m. The farm will feature the Forest of Frights scare trail, The Night time Wagon Ride, and the Flashlight Corn Maze. Ghost Walk

OGDENSBURG — The Ogdensburg History Museum is offering a Ghost Walk that will take visitors through the streets of Ogdensburg to explore the city’s most haunted locations such as the Frederic Remington Art Museum, where they will learn about the city’s haunted history, notorious criminals and learn about the city’s dark past on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Participants should meet on the steps of the Ogdensburg Public Library. Red Tent Retreat

MASSENA — The first-ever Massena Fall Fest ‘Pumpkin Palooza’ will be held Saturday, Oct.14, from 10 a.m.-11 p.m. in downtown Massena. Activities will include live music, food trucks, vendors, local brews, pumpkin decorating, bounce houses, face painting and fireworks. Admission is free.

Haunted House Walk-Through

MASSENA — The Massena Schine Theater Haunted House Theater Walk will take place Saturday, Oct. 14, at 65 Main St. in conjunction with the Massena Fall Festival Pumpkin Palooza. Players and staff will be present to help unload bags and assist you. Money raised will provide scholarships to the annual Potsdam Summer Basketball Camp, as well as funds for the basketball program. A free poetry workshop titled ‘Exploring and Creating the Poetry of Gender’ will be held at Potsdam Public Library Saturday, Oct. 14, with Elliot Pecora, from 3-5 p.m. Pecora is a transmasculine poet, writer,whose work centers around navigating the world in a trans body. A Poetry Open Mic will follow the workshop.

MASSENA — Fellow photographers can learn how to use camera lenses to the best advantage when taking photographs awith photographer Konstantin Tovstiadi. He will present his talk at Nicandri Nature Center on October 14 at 10 a.m..The presenter uses Zeiss/Nikon as the example, but the lens talk applies to all photographers using manual lenses. It is open to all levels of photographers. The program is free. No registration is required.

Cemetery preservation

POTSDAM — Join Allyson Stephenson (AKA the "Crazy Cemetery Lady") at Bayside Cemetery, Potsdam, on Sunday, Oct. 15, 1-3 p.m., to learn safe and tested processes for cleaning historic headstones. The workshop is presented by the St. Lawrence County Historical Association (SLCHA). Stephenson will show participants how to identify the stresses and dangers historic headstones face and how to clean different types of stones without damaging them. During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to try out the techniques on headstones. Cost is $5 per person; SLCHA members are free.
