POTSDAM -- Leon A. Martin, co-proprietor and operator of Martin’s Maple Street Service Station at 59 Maple St., died Sunday at the age of 73.
His family attended him at the time of his death.
At the service station over his long career, Martin presided over the operations of the garage and the daily gatherings of friends, neighbors and customers at the station, where news, stories and opinions were shared.
Martin had been hospitalized for much of the time since an accident Nov. 14 on CR 59, the Back Hannawa Road, in which he suffered neck and head injuries. He was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital for his injuries, and was subsequently transferred to Upstate Medical Center with broken cervical vertebrae, and to other facilities after that. He had spent some time back at his Potsdam home.
The garage closed for a time in his absence during his hospitalization, while his Brother, Robert, and his son, Randy, and other members of the family, considered what to do.
