Gem & Mineral Show
CANTON: St. Lawrence County Rock & Mineral Club hosting 53rd annual Gem & Mineral Show & Swap, Canton Pavilion, 90 Lincoln St. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24 and 25; $2 admission, children 12 and under free; featuring handcrafted jewelry made with precious and semi-precious stones for the jewelry lover, gemstone beads, jewelry making supplies, free lessons for the crafter, museum quality crystals, fossils, mineral identification table, mineral specimens for the nature lover and art collector, handcrafted gift items, free wire-wrapping lessons, free mineral kits for the kids, mineral collecting trips to some of St. Lawrence County's famous rock-hunting sites for the serious and novice rockhound alike; Brazilian amethyst cathedral raffle, $1 or six for $5; hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, chips, fries for sale; auction at 5 p.m. Saturday.
School supply distribution
CANTON: Church & Community Program school supply program distribution, 1-4 p.m., Canton United Methodist Church, corner of Chapel and Court Streets; families with incomes below the federal poverty guidelines who have students in K-12 in the Canton, Hermon-DeKalb, and Edwards-Knox School Districts can get the supplies; for example, families that are eligible for food through the pantry qualify for the school supplies; free back-to-school haircut, thanks to stylist Noelle Bardeschewski of Midtown Hair; local dentist provides free toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Welsh Society meets
RICHVILLE: Richville Welsh Society meeting, 2 p.m., Main Street, Richville; guest speaker will be DeKalb historian Bryan Thompson, local musicians Nicholfalls will provide special music; learn historic significance of the Welsh settlers of Richville and try your hand at the Gymraeg language, and ancient Welsh dialect; refreshments served at the Richville Historical Association following the service; public welcome to attend.
