WADDINGTON — Waddington resident Jake Yaeger made a special journey this Friday.

The local school teacher from the North Country participated in the iconic Sea Gull Century ride for his second time on Saturday, uniting his passion for cycling with cherished family ties in Maryland.

Starting and ending at Salisbury University, the Sea Gull Century has grown from a small gathering of 68 in 1988 to a nationally renowned bicycling event.

This year, Jake was among the thousands of cyclists navigating the scenic routes of Maryland's Eastern Shore.

For Jake, this ride holds more than just the allure of cycling. It's a heartwarming reunion as some of his family resides in Maryland, making the event doubly significant.

As he takes on the Assateague Century route, he won't be cheered on by his family alone. The wild horses of Assateague, known to grace the area, will be there, adding a unique charm to his journey.

The Sea Gull Century stands out not just for its picturesque terrains but also for its rich history and community impact. Riders from varied age groups, as young as 10 and as spirited as 99, have taken on the challenge in previous years.

The event is backed by over 150 student volunteers and 45 law enforcement personnel, ensuring safety and smooth proceedings. Revenues from the event support various community initiatives, from student scholarships to local non-profits.
