POTSDAM – The village has installed a rental kiosk for kayaks and canoes in Ives Park, and the device should be ready to rent in the coming days.
Village Administrator Isabelle Gates-Shult told village trustees and the mayor at their meeting Monday, Aug. 19 that the kiosk will be ready for business after a few of the rental payment details have been ironed out.
“The kiosk system for kayak and boat rentals in Ives Park has been installed. We are working on a couple issues with the credit card terminal but otherwise it should be operational within the next day or so,” Gates-Shult told the board.
The kiosk, purchased from Outdoor Vending Machines of Muskego, Wisconsin, offers unattended rental of water craft for use on the Raquette River which flows past the park. Up to 12 kayaks or canoes can be housed on the kiosk. Boat renters can use a credit card to access the kiosk and sign out a boat.
The machine cost the village around $17,000.
It is part of a growing number of infrastructure additions to the park in recent years, including a kayak or canoe storage shed, farmer’s market pavilion and bathrooms.
The kiosk will allow for automated check-out and check-in of kayaks, paddles, and life jackets without on-site staff, saving on work hours for department staff so they can be tasked with other duties. Parks and recreation staff have been managing kayak and canoe rentals at the boathouse in person for certain periods of the day.
Village officials have said that the kiosk will be available to residents from April until October and from sunrise to sunset, increasing village residents' access.
