Town of Potsdam assessment won’t be complete until 2025

Attention Town of Potsdam desidents, which includes the villages of Norwood and Potsdam. The revaluation will not be completed until 2025. As of right now GAR is just starting the data collection and photographing properties.

The beginning of this week (4.15) there will be a podcast on the Town of Potsdam web site (Town of Potsdam Revaluation (potsdamny.us) which will explain a little about the revaluation. There will be a couple of public meetings with GAR (the revaluation company.) In June, homeowners can expect to receive a data mailer/survey well as cost/income questionnaires to business owners.  As soon as the contract was signed, GAR also began the sales validation and verification process.

Please continue to checking the Town of Potsdam website for further pod casts and information regarding the revaluation. At the beginning of May, Gar will post a phone number which will directly connect you to GAR Associates for questions that you may have.

The preceding information was relayed to me by Tina Miller, Town of Potsdam; Assessor Clerk.

Be prepared to appropriately address your concerns with the revaluation of your property. Keep in mind the following: Assessor, in this case GAR, may gain access to your property ONLY WITH YOUR PERMISSION. Assessor (powers and duties) (entry upon real property) - Real Property Tax Law, §§ 500,501: An assessor should not enter on private property and take measurements or photographs without first securing the permission of the landowner.

For further information you may find the following publication of help. “Fighting Back: Appealing Your Property Tax Assessment Made Easy” written by Joseph Pacini. The information in the book is an informational guide and not a substitute for legal advice.
