MASSENA -- Despite union leaders striking a tentative agreement with Alcoa, United Steelworks Local 420-A members are still moving forward with a strike authorization vote today, June 5.
Text messages were shared with union members late last night, stating a new contract has been reached after five additional days of bargaining.
No specific details about the contract were offered as of press time.
The contract will be presented to union members next week for review and a ratification vote.
In the meantime, the strike authorization vote will move forward in the event the deal is not ratified.
Meeting times are scheduled for 7:30 a.m., 2:15 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with polls open from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. for those who can't make a meeting, officials said.
Negotiations had begun March 2, which yielded a tentative deal on May 2.
That agreement was struck down by a member vote shortly after, at which time a 30-day extension was authorized while negotiations continued.
If a deal is not struck by June 15 workers could go on strike.
Voting will take place until 8 p.m. at the union hall.
