Elmira, NY – The SUNY Canton baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning but Stevens scored 10 unanswered runs to earn a 12-5 victory on Friday evening at Dunn Field in Elmira.
The Ducks improve to 15-16-1 overall and 7-5 in Empire 8 play, while the Roos fall to 5-21 and 1-10.
Travis Schindler led off the bottom of the first with a home run to right center field, his second round tripper of the season. Brandon Welch doubled the lead with an RBI double to center field scoring Seth Douglas, who doubled down the left field line earlier in the inning.
The Ducks scored three runs each in the third and sixth innings along with a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh frames to open a 10-2 advantage. The Roos countered with three runs in the eighth on a Wilson Matos 2 RBI double to left field to score Schindler and Douglas and Matos scored on a Christian Nazario-Cruz ground out.
Stevens added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth for the 12-5 final. Danny Poidomani earned his fifth win of the season tossing eight and two-thirds innings giving up five earned runs with seven strike outs. Matt Hall took the loss striking out five batters giving up five runs and five hits over 4.1 innings.
The baseball team is back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader v. host Elmira College at 12 p.m.
