CANTON -- A garden program at the St. Lawrence County Jail is offering inmates at the facility the opportunity to try their hand at gardening.

The St Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility successfully implemented their facility vegetable garden this year. The project has been in  development for the past two years as the sheriff's office worked to get  equipment and supplies  for clearing and breaking/tilling the necessary ground, and erecting fencing.

St. Lawrence County Undersheriff Sean McCargar said the program allows incarcerated individuals the opportunity to learn skills while serving out their terms.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff Rick Engle said the program has been well received by the participants who enjoy the time outside.

This year also saw the addition of a 30 tree apple orchard and 40 blueberry bushes thanks to the assistance of the Willow Tree Florist & Landscaping in Potsdam.

Engle and McCargar said that in spite of the challenging and persistent wet weather this summer, the hard work and determination of our crew of inmate volunteers led to a very successful first season.

The produce has been donated to the Office of the Aging and is distributed to residents of assisted living facilities, homebound residents they serve, and used in meal production.

To date, more than 70 totes/boxes of vegetables and over 50 pumpkins have been donated and utilized by the Office of the Aging for the elderly of our communities throughout St. Lawrence County.
