MADRID – History came alive during the fifth annual Civil War Weekend held at Fort Tribute July 26 and 27, part of the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum.

The weekend event featured the sounds, sights, and atmosphere of Civil War combat between the Union and Confederate soldiers.

A new addition this year was the traveling H.L. Hunley exhibit, a replica of the first Confederate submarine, which sank in Charleston Harbor on January 17, 1864. Visitors viewed the submarine’s interior and learned about its history.

Visitors toured the Union and Confederate camp and battlefield hospital.

Historical demonstrations in period cooking, artillery firing, and blacksmithing were given.

Balladeer Linda Russell performed on the dulcimers, guitar, and penny whistle. She also gave demonstrations of how wooden dancing dolls, were used as limberjacks percussion instruments.
