POTSDAM – Aileen O'Donoghue, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at St. Lawrence University, and Jan Wojcik, Professor Emeritus at Clarkson University, Biblical Scholar, and Director of Reynolds Observatory, will give a slide show, entitled "The Bethlehem Star: Can we still see it?" Friday, Dec. 10 at SUNY Potsdam, in conjunction with a planetarium show by Bruce McClure.
Computer simulations will take the audience back in time, to observe the night sky over Bethlehem during the possible birth dates of Jesus as described by Matthew's gospel, with reference to the story in the Gospel itself.
McClure, columnist for EarthSky, an internationally syndicated radio program on science, will present a planetarium show on the December night sky.
To attend the slide program and the planetarium show, meet the presenters at the front door of Stowell Hall, SUNY Potsdam, at 6:30 p.m.
Parking is available at the Crane School of Music parking lot.
Afterwards, if the weather permits, the show will move to Reynolds Observatory, where people will use the telescope to view deep-sky treasures, such as the Andromeda galaxy, Orion nebula and Jupiter's moons.
Bring binoculars and learn how to star-hop to easy-to-see double stars and star clusters.
Or bring a reclining lawn chair to enjoy the Geminid meteors.
All events are free and open to the public. Children are particularly welcome.
