CANTON -- Five organizations that support mental health services in St. Lawrence County will receive a combined $17,393 extra as part of pass through funding from the New York State Office of Mental Health.

According to Community Services Director Jay Ullrich, the funding will pass through his office to the ARC, Citizen Advocates, Catholic Charities, Step by Step and Seaway Valley Prevention Council.

Ullrich said the state Office of Mental Health aids in funding such organizations and allocated the funds to St. Lawrence County. The funds include a Targeted Inflationary Increase (TII) of 2.6% to support a cost of living increase.

"This is for mental health for the pass through agencies listed," Ullrich told legislators during the Dec. 15 Service Committee meeting.

He noted that the disbursements would be increasingly moving forward and 100% pass through funding from the contracted agencies.

A total of $102,804 in revenue will be distributed amongst the five organizations, according to county officials.

In other action, legislators also approved abolishing a Community Health Educator position in the Public Health Department to create and fill a Public Health Educator position.

Officials say the title update is in "order to  align with Public Health Law and with other existing titles within the Department."

The position is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and implementing educational activities and programs addressing health issues and public health needs, officials said.

The position will also analyze, design, implement and evaluate departmental programs and procedures "to ensure the delivery of accurate, evidence-based public health information."

"Public Health Educator plays a critical role in keeping the community, service providers, and local partners informed and up-to-date on public health activities, initiatives, and educational efforts," county officials said.
