CANTON – Several new small businesses and some established local companies in Canton have been awarded grants through a microenterprise program administered through the village’s economic development office.
The Village of Canton announced awards through the Canton Microenterprise Grant Program (CMGP) Tuesday morning.
The CMGP was established to provide grants to, or create jobs for, low-moderate income persons in Canton, who start or expand microenterprise businesses in the village, said a press release from the village.
As such, the primary goal of the program is to stimulate the inception and growth of private sector businesses owned and operated by low-moderate income persons, and to expand employment opportunities for persons of low-moderate income, the press release said.
A 2016 Community Development Block Grant to the Village is providing $176,000 in funds to support the CMGP.
Start-up businesses awarded include: Hawkshaw Mead Works, $35,000; Grasse River Outfitters, $25,101; and Sweet Margaret, $30,000.
Existing businesses who received awards include: Fourth Coast Entertainment, $30,417; Celtic Knot, $30,417; and Luna Boutique, $25,066.
The program is being administered through the Canton Office of Community Economic Development.
“The CDBG program is a great opportunity to provide much needed capital to these micro businesses that are at the heart of our economy and community. One of the program goals is to fill vacant commercial spaces downtown. It will be exciting to see more businesses popping up that offer diverse options and enhance the Village’s vibrancy. We have some great things coming,” said director and program manager Leigh Rodriguez.
