OGDENSBURG -- Advancing Tobacco Free Communities and the Reality Check youth of St. Lawrence, Jefferson, and Lewis counties is supporting a new law raising the age to buy tobacco products across the state.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo Tuesday signed legislation to raise the minimum legal sales age for all tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, to 21.
The bill will go into effect Jan. 1, 2020.
“Restricting tobacco product sales to those 21 and over is one step in protecting our youth from nicotine addiction; but, since e-cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products are so appealing to kids, T21 doesn’t solve this deadly problem,” according to a Reality Check press release. “Restricting e-cigarettes and other tobacco product sales to those 21 and over is an important part of a comprehensive effort to protect our youth. However, e-cigarettes are setting kids up to become a new generation addicted to nicotine. The flavors draw them in, and the often high-level of nicotine addicts them.”
