North Country This Week
POTSDAM -- There are currently 12 students in the Potsdam Central School District who were granted a religious exemption from immunizations and will need to receive immunizations or be home schooled.
As of June 13, there is no longer a religious exemption to the requirement that children be vaccinated against measles and other diseases to attend public, private or parochial school or child day care settings. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed the legislation last month.
“This week the principals sent out letters to those families to inform them of the change in legislation and provide information about immunization clinics available through St. Lawrence County Public Health,” Potsdam Central Superintendent Joann Chambers said.
Families are encouraged to get the shots as soon as possible if they do not plan to home school their children, according to a State Education Department memo sent to schools.
“I have not yet had any conversations with parents,” Chambers said.
She said that students will need to begin receiving the required vaccinations within 14 days of the first day of school, which is Sept. 4.
