POTSDAM — Local architectural and architectural engineering design firm Brooks Washburn Architecture has been acquired by an international firm.

LaBella Associates, an international architecture, engineering, environmental and planning firm, recently announced its purchase of the local company started and operated by local architect Brooks Washburn.

“This partnering with LaBella is the next step in the development of our well established practice in Northern New York.  It allows us to continue to serve our existing clients as well as expanding into new practice areas,” Washburn said. “We are very pleased with the blending of our established practice in Northern New York into their larger business experience and capacity.  New opportunities will open up while maintaining the existing practice we have developed over the years.”

Washburn started the company in 1991.

The architect and his firm are known for several local projects including Woodstock Village at Clarkson University; Satterlee Hall Clock Tower Historical Renovations at SUNY Potsdam; the SLC Public Safety Building of  St Lawrence County; Potsdam, Canton and Massena Housing Authorities; Canton-Potsdam Hospital/ Rochester Regional Health, and many buildings throughout the North Country.

Washburn said the blending of his existing practice into the larger LaBella business will both maintain his existing practice relationships and open up new opportunities for other projects in Northern New York.

“Combining our well established local practice with LaBella’s larger experience and capacity will benefit Northern New York clients as we can continue to work with our existing clients while working on new opportunities in our local area,” said Washburn.

Washburn recently acquired the Market Square Mall building and is in the process of designing several rehabilitation projects in the Raymond Street area that will be incorporated into the village’s downtown streetscape project funded in part by the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative.

"It's wonderful that LaBella had the confidence that Brooks Washburn, DPC, was a clear choice as the partner for their North Country expansion,” said Corey Mousaw, project manager for Brooks Washburn Architecture.

“This will give our clients that personalized experience that they love about Brooks Washburn, DPC, but also the capabilities of a big firm,” said Mousaw. “We value not only the close relationships that we have with our clients, but also our deep commitment to our local community. This acquisition will allow us to add jobs to the area and further develop our existing team."

The addition of Brooks Washburn expands LaBella’s presence in the North Country and brings its total number of offices in New York State to 14, the announcement from LaBella said.

“We are excited to welcome the Brooks Washburn team to the LaBella family,” said Jeff Roloson, President, LaBella Associates. “Their broad architecture expertise and deep relationships across the North Country will enable us to more effectively serve the North Country community in order to meet their specific regional needs.”

“With experience and expertise across residential, commercial and institutional architecture, the acquisition adds a small but skilled team of architects to the LaBella team and furthers LaBella’s commitment and access to the region,” the firm said of Brooks Washburn Architecture.
