Pickleball club raises $20,000 for five local fire departments

POTSDAM — About  $20,000 was raised for five area fire departments at a fall festival organized by the North Country Pickleball Club.

The event also included a 9/11 memorial ceremony, pickleball tournament, 5K run,  kickball contest, and raffle baskets.

The Potsdam, West Potsdam, West Stockholm, Hannawa Falls and Norwood Volunteer fire departments will receive the funds raised for equipment and training. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised will be donated to the departments for new equipment and training, said organizers.

The highlight of the festival was a tribute to local firefighters held Sept. 7 at Sandstoner Park Arena. The memorial ceremony included a fireman’s prayer, moment of silence, a bell tolling, and bugle played by Mary Russell. Bagpipe music by Ray Percer started and ended the tribute.

“North Country Pickleball Club chose this year’s September tournament to donate to the fire departments because they are so deserving of help and support. They do a lot for our communities, and it was our way to show respect and bring recognition to their group for everything that they do,” said organizer Teresa Fisher.

“Potsdam Fire Department wasn't able to be in attendance for a lot of the day because they were at an accident. It is an example of what happens to these volunteers. They are consistently pulled away from their families, from their events, and their lives to go help others. We are glad we can help them,” said Fisher.

A chicken and biscuit dinner was hosted by the Potsdam Elks Club. The Elks Club donated $1,000 to the fundraiser.

Several dozen local businesses and individuals also donated to the fundraiser.

Donations are still gladly being accepted. Donation checks can be made out to North Country Pickleball and mailed to North Country Pickleball, 729 Pleasant Valley Rd., Potsdam, NY 13676. Donations can also be made through Venmo: @nocopickleballclub
