On Thursday April 20 I attended the debate in Massena at the Union Hall between Detective Rick Engle and Undersheriff Sean O'Brien. I went in with an open mind while also wanting to see for myself why the local men and women in law enforcement chose to endorse Detective Engle and why Hank Ford chose to endorse the current Undersheriff in the upcoming election.
The debate was interesting. I noted that Undersheriff O'Brien took all the credit for the many positive improvements in the Sheriff's Department while also passing the negative or tough issues still present on to others within the chain of command.
Following the debate I now completely understand Mr. Ford's opinion that the current Undersheriff has a vast knowledge of the administrative aspect of the job. Administrative skills can be taught and usually come with time. Leadership is a quality that cannot be taught, and it is in my opinion the most important skill that the new Sheriff should possess.
Unfortunately the quality of leadership is something that Sean O'Brien is clearly lacking. I firmly believe that local law enforcement personnel see this too and that is the reason that they have given their support to Detective Engle.
After observing the debate and listening closely to both of these men my vote will be for Detective Engle as I feel that he possesses the skill, personality, and commitment to service that this county needs. Rick Engle's service to our country while serving in the United States Marine Corps as well as his many years as a Deputy and then as a Detective shows his dedication to the citizens of St. Lawrence County.
Please join me on June 27 and cast your vote in support of Detective Rick Engle for St. Lawrence County Sheriff.
