OGDENSBURG -- A fire in the city left 13 people displaced Saturday afternoon.
Volunteers from the American Red Cross provided immediate emergency aid to 13 people after a fire on Hasbrouck Street in Ogdensburg.
The fire started shortly before 6 p.m. after city police noticed smoke coming from a structure on the corner of Hasbrouck and Greene streets, according to fire officials.
"Engine 1 under the command of Captain Brunet responded immediately calling for Heuvelton mutual aid," a statement on the department's Facebook page said.
All off-duty personnel were requested to the scene and Morristown was placed on standby at the fire station.
Firefighters went to work stretching lines to the dwelling and to the hydrant, which was "luckily less than a 100 feet away" from the fire, officials said.
While stretching the attack lines the fire flashed and grew rapidly.
As more help arrived on scene, progress was made and the blaze was reportedly under control in about 45 minutes and declared out in two and a half hours.
Once more off duty and mutual aid arrived a major overhaul of the involved area began opening up multiple hot spots, officials said. Waddington was called to the scene for a cascade system to fill air pack bottle.
"Much appreciation to all mutual aid departments for the help as it was greatly needed," city fire officials said.
Assisting on scene were city police, National grid, Liberty Utilities, and firefighters from Heuvelton, Morristown, Lisbon, Waddington, as well as County Car 9.
The fire is under investigation.
The Red Cross provided financial assistance which can be used for necessities such as shelter, food, and clothing to two adults and eleven children, ranging in age from 4 to 15. Volunteers also offered health services and emotional support.
In the coming days, Red Cross staff and volunteers will remain available to help those affected by the fire as they navigate the road to recovery.
