MASSENA — The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is warning the public of changing water conditions on the St. Lawrence River during summer months.

Water may be released from the Long Sault Dam along the river, potentially resulting in significant water level and flow speeds changes upstream of the dam and in the South Channel, officials said.

The public, especially boaters and swimmers, should:

• Always exercise caution on the river and along riverbanks.
• Stay at least 800 feet away from all the dams between the Iroquois Dam in Waddington, and the Long Sault Dam spillway and Robert Moses Power Dam in Massena.
• Be aware of changing river conditions and strong current.
• Never swim alone and always communicate boating plans and routes with family or friends.

Outflows from Lake Ontario are established on a weekly basis by the International Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River Board. The board is continuously monitoring and assessing water conditions.
