NSHA expands pediatric services with new clinic, dedicated urgent care

North Star Health Alliance Pediatrics -- a network that includes North Star Pediatrics in Watertown, Carthage Pediatrics, and Claxton Medical Pediatrics in Ogdensburg -- recently expanded its offerings to include the North Country’s only dedicated Pediatric Urgent Care.

Building on the success of North Star Pediatrics, which opened its doors in January 2025, this new service ensures families throughout Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties have fast, expert care for non‑life‑threatening illnesses and injuries, seven days a week.

The new NSHA new Pediatric Urgent Care Center opened on March 31 at North Star Pediatrics, 1571 Washington St., Suite 107, Watertown. Infants through teens can be seen for common bumps, scrapes and sniffles without an appointment.

Designed to minimize stress, the pediatric urgent care features separate areas for well and sick visits, child‑sized furniture, and soothing décor.

Pediatric providers use comfort‑focused techniques -- including numbing creams, distraction tools, and gentle handling -- help ensure each visit is as calm and pain‑free as possible.

A detailed visit summary is forwarded to the child’s primary care provider to guarantee seamless follow‑up. Conditions treated at the Pediatric Urgent Care Center include:

• Respiratory Illnesses: Asthma flare‑ups, croup, bronchitis
• Fever and Dehydration: Rapid assessment and rehydration
• Minor Injuries: Sprains, lacerations needing stitches, minor fractures
• Skin and Eye Concerns: Rashes, eczema, pink eye, foreign body removal
• Rapid Diagnostics: On‑site tests for flu, RSV, COVID‑19, strep, and urinalysis
• Procedures: Tick removal, wound care, and lab draws
And more!

Hours are Monday – Friday from 2 – 8 p.m., and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

School‑Based Health Clinics

NSHA brings essential healthcare directly into local schools through its Carthage-area hospital–operated clinics at Beaver River School, Carthage Middle School, Carthage High School, and LaFargeville Central School.

These on‑campus clinics offer:
• Preventive Care & Wellness: Nutrition education, routine school physicals, immunizations, and PPD testing to keep students healthy and classroom-ready.
• Chronic Condition Management: Ongoing support for asthma, diabetes, and other long‑term health issues, plus allergy injections administered on site.
• Acute Illness & Injury Treatment: Quick evaluation and treatment for minor injuries, respiratory illnesses, ear infections, and other common ailments—eliminating lengthy travel to off‑campus facilities.
• Behavioral Health Services: Onsite counseling and referrals in partnership with NSHA’s behavioral health teams, helping students address stress, anxiety, and other emotional needs without missing class time.
• Preventive Dental Care (LaFargeville only): Free cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants provided at no cost, ensuring students maintain good oral health as part of their overall well‑being.

By embedding care within the school day, NSHA’s school‑based clinics remove barriers to access and foster healthier, more resilient students across the North Country.
