The vacant seat on the Canton Village Board was filled Wednesday night, Jan. 17 with the swearing in of Jonathan Pinckney.

Mayor Michael Dalton said Pinckney will bring a youthful and positive approach to village government.

“I wanted someone younger who can bring a different perspective to the board and Jon fills in what I was looking for,” stated Dalton. “He is a businessman who has done a lot of things for the community. He’s excited to get involved and learn. I am pleased to have him and I’m looking for good things from him.”

Pinckney, 28, said he is excited to be a village trustee and continue to strive to improve the quality of life in his hometown.

“I am honored to accept this appointment to the Village Board from Mayor Dalton and am looking forward to bringing a younger dynamic to the board of trustees,” Pinckney said. “Born and raised in Canton, being an active member of the community has always been a way of life for me.”

Pinckney, a Republican, recently relocated to Canton from the Syracuse area. He has been an active member of the Canton Fire Department and long-time advocate for the Boy Scouts of America. He is also a past chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeal for the Town of Canton.

“My public service and business experience will be beneficial in making the right decisions for the current and future citizens of Canton,” he remarked.

“I have always been a lifelong learner and will always do my best to educate myself on crucial topics that arise. I look forward to serving out this term and thank you to the board and community for their support.”

Pinckney filled the board vacancy left by Klaus Proemm who stepped down Nov. 30, 2023. Proemm had two years remaining in his current term. Pinckney, if interested in staying on the board, will have to run in this November’s election, according to the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections.
