MORRISTOWN — Morristown Central School will host a mock distracted driving/DWI exercise for students in grades 10-12 on Thursday.
The mock crash is a portrayal of a motor vehicle crash to increase the awareness of the dangers of driving distracted, driving under the influence, driving unrestrained and high-risk behaviors that result in motor vehicle crashes.
During the exercise, there will be a significant presence of emergency personnel at the Morristown Central School campus as first responders simulate rescue, medical transport, and arrest of student actors. Following the mock crash, students will be presented with a mock trial, during which student actors are held accountable for their actions.
Students will witness firsthand the devastating and lifetime effects of risky driving behaviors. It is an opportunity to increase the awareness and compliance of the New York State traffic safety laws, reinforce healthy decision making skills, and decrease the number of injuries and fatalities associated with motor vehicle crashes.
Participants in the exercise will include personnel from St. Lawrence County STOP DWI, St. Lawrence County Emergency Services Coordination, Morristown and Brier Hill Ambulance Services, St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, NYS Troopers, Life Net Air Transport, Frary Funeral Home, District Judge Phillips, Morristown Central School District, and Hammond Central School District.
Counseling staff will be available from both participating districts throughout the day following the drill.
