Madrid-Waddington Central places sixth in U.S. Drone Soccer National Championship

MADRID — Madrid-Waddington Central School District competed in the U.S. Drone Soccer National Championship April 27 and placed sixth.

The national event was hosted by Virginia Tech's Innovation Campus.

“It was a great representation from our very small district that would not have been possible without the support of the school community,” said Michelle Burke

Technology Coordinator at the district.

There were 16 national teams who competed, including the national winning team from Istanbul, Turkey.

The M-W team placed sixth in the nation for the second year in a row, which was incredible considering the level of competition was much more robust this year.

In the double elimination tournament, the team lost its first match of the day to the team from Long Beach, California who placed first in the nation.

The Jackets then went on to beat teams from Virginia, North Carolina, and Turkey. The elimination match for the Yellow Jackets was versus the team they beat last month at Regionals from Rotterdam-Mohannasan.
