Louise Mary Pierce, 97, Norwood

NORWOOD – Louise Mary Pierce, of New Street, peacefully passed away Thursday afternoon, January 25, 2024, at Massena Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Louise was born on May 14, 1926, in Stockholm, the daughter of the late Peter and Edna (Hutchinson) Chatell.

She attended rural schools before graduating from Potsdam High School in 1943.

On April 23, 1946, she married Rodney Pierce at the United Methodist Church in Norfolk with Rev. Frank Brown, officiating. Rodney predeceased her in December 1996.

Louise worked for a time at Grand Union Grocery in Norfolk. After the birth of her children, she dedicated her life to raising her family.

Louise was a very talented baker, having made and decorated numerous wedding and special occasion cakes for over 40 years.

Always active within her community, she was a lifelong member of the Norwood United Methodist Church, an 83-year member of the Winthrop Grange, and a 63-year member of the Norwood American Legion Post 68 Auxiliary, where she served many roles including president and Poppy Chairperson for many years.

She was a Cub and Boy Scout Leader, member of the Home Bureau, March of Dimes Inspector, St. Lawrence County Election Inspector, Chairwoman of the Norwood Fall Festival, and the Red Hat Society.

In 2013, she was honored at the Citizen of Year by the Norwood Kiwanis Club.

She and her late husband enjoyed traveling, having visited every state with the exception of Hawaii. Louise enjoyed working on her mother’s loom weaving rugs and playing cards.

Louise is survived by her two sons, Chester and Peggy Pierce of Newark Valley, New York and Frank Pierce of Norwood; two daughters, Patricia and Roy Mayo of Potsdam and Meribeth and Richard Liscum of Ammon, Idaho; 11 grandchildren, 29 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Louise was predeceased by her siblings, Janett, Ruth, Olive, Vera, and Bernard.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, where friends may call Saturday, January 27th, 6-8:00 PM and Sunday, January 28th, 12-2:00 PM with a service to follow at 2:00 PM with Lay Minister Jane Peacock, officiating.

Burial will be held in the spring in Riverside Cemetery, Norwood.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Norwood United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
