Local Democrats, North Country Neighbors for Civic Engagement, are urging Rep. Elise Stefanik to address the impacts of federal tariffs on the economy, saying the congresswoman has so far failed to respond.
North Country Neighbors for Civic Engagement placed a full-page ad in three regional papers several weeks ago detailing the negative effects of Trump-era tariffs on tourism, agriculture, local businesses, and families in New York’s 21st Congressional District. The group also sent copies of the ad to Stefanik and to state Senators Dan Stec and Joseph Griffo, requesting responses.
“Over a month later, we are here today to share that their response was… to ignore us,” said Ginger Storey-Welch of North Country Neighbors for Civic Engagement. She noted that conflicts with Canada could cost the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority more than $1 million in lost revenue this year alone, while Yale economists estimate the tariffs could cost families in the district an average of $2,300 each, a total impact of $615 million.
The group meets every Wednesday to discuss local issues and advocate for more direct engagement from elected officials.
