Ivan J. Major, 90, Massena

MASSENA -- Ivan J. Major, age 90, passed away early Tuesday morning, January 16, 2024, at Massena Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena.

Friends and family may be received on Sunday, January 21, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Monday, January 22, 2024, at 10:00 am with Rev. Leagon Carlin officiating.

Burial with Full Military Honors will be held in Calvary Cemetery in the spring.

Ivan was born on December 27, 1933, the son of the late Artel and Lorence (Leroux) Major.

After high school graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1959. Ivan then started employment with Reynolds Metals, retiring as a Crane Operator, after 37 years.

He married Margaret Ayotte on August 11, 1956, at St. Patrick’s Church in Hogansburg, NY. He and his wife enjoyed going for rides in his convertible.

Ivan was an incredible craftsman and self-taught man. He enjoyed the time spent at local diners’, sometimes twice in one day.

Ivan was also an avid car enthusiast. He belong to the Malone Old Car Club, and the Tri-Town Snowmobile Club and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Massena, NY.

Ivan is survived by his four children, Thomas and Eileen Major of Buxton, ME, Timothy Major and companion, Sharon Curran of Rooseveltown, NY, Anthony and Diane Major, Joseph and Candy Major both of Massena, NY, a sister, Mary Ellen Gardner of Massena, NY, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Ivan was predeceased by his wife, Margaret of 60 years in 2016.
