A Hogansburg man on Wednesday was sentenced to more than a year in prison for possessing untaxed cigarettes.
Ian Tarbell, 46, who was convicted of possession of contraband cigarettes, was sentenced to 15 months in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Richard J. Arcara, according to the United States attorney in Buffalo.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell T. Ippolito, Jr., who handled the case, said in a news release that Tarbell was arrested on Feb. 18, 2016, in Pembroke, N.Y., following a traffic stop by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
Tarbell was driving a truck pulling a trailer loaded with untaxed and unstamped cigarettes.
In total, he was transporting more than 900,000 unstamped and untaxed cigarettes.
The New York state and federal taxes imposed on such cigarettes would have totaled more than $300,000, federal prosecutors said.
The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Ashan Benedict; the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of William A. Sheron, Jr.; and the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, under the direction of Commissioner Thomas Mattox, prosecutors said.
