Friendly competition encouraged as Potsdam Salvation Army seeks bell ringers

POTSDAM — The Potsdam Salvation Army is calling on local residents and organizations to support this year’s Red Kettle Campaign. Bell ringers are urgently needed, and The Salvation Army is launching a community-wide challenge to spark friendly competition and hometown spirit.

This year, the need is greater than ever. With the sharp increase in food prices, clothing, gasoline, heating fuels, utilities, rent, mortgages, you name it, everything has gone up, families across our community are struggling. The Potsdam Salvation Army has seen a dramatic rise in requests for assistance.

“We need your help desperately this year,” Major William Lynch said. “Every dollar raised at the kettles goes directly to helping our neighbors.”

Fraternities and sororities, churches, clubs, businesses, sports teams, school groups, community organizations, families, friends, and individuals are encouraged to participate and challenge each other to see who can raise the most money.

“Every hour someone stands at a kettle brings help to a neighbor, a friend, a family member, or even you,” said Lynch. “Potsdam has always been full of compassionate, generous people. Together, we can make a real difference for families right here at home.”

All funds raised stay in Potsdam and surrounding areas, providing food, warmth, emergency support, and hope.

Sign-up is easier than ever. New signs around Potsdam include a QR code that anyone can scan with a phone to instantly sign up for a bell-ringing shift.

Volunteers may also call 585-362-7686 to reserve a kettle location and time slot.
