GOUVERNEUR — A fire destroyed a large storage facility owned by contracting firm Empire Northeast early this morning.
The blaze at 45 South Gordon St. was discovered by a local resident and reported to Gouverneur Fire Department around 1:30 a.m., according to Fire Chief Thomas Conklin.
Firefighters were able to save two nearby buildings that are also owned by Empire Northeast, he said.
“It was a good save by firefighters — people will still have jobs since we saved the office space,” Conklin said.
Firefighters from Gouverneur, Richville, Edwards, Antwerp and Oxbox helped put the fire out.
The fire had about a 15 to 20 minute head start on firemen, he said. The storage barn is considered a total loss.
No injuries were reported.
Conklin said the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
