MASSENA -- Doris Haggart, a longtime resident of Massena, died on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at the age of 98.
Born November 21, 1925, in Corning, New York, she was the only daughter of Valentine Rettig Doran and Genevieve May (Hauff) Doran.
She was graduated from Corning Free Academy, received a Bachelor of Education from Albany State Teachers’ College in 1947, and a Masters Degree in Education from St. Lawrence University in 1960.
She married Donald Hubert Haggart on August 17, 1948, at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence, New York with Fr. Maguire officiating. Mr. Haggart died on July 19, 1991.
Their 43-year marriage produced three (3) children, all of whom survive her: Donald Peter (Rosalie) Haggart of Georgetown, NY; Valarie (Pierre) Guerard of Lake Placid, NY; and Natalie (James) Sweatland of Massena, NY.
A long and prominent career in education was concluded in 1982 upon her retirement, having taught the intricacies of Latin and French, the joys and complexities of English grammar, and the wonders of literature to countless students for over 29 years, educating youth in North Lawrence, Brushton-Moira and Massena schools.
She was a member of the Massena Senior Citizens, the VFW Auxiliary, and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.
An accomplished pianist, an avid reader and a talented seamstress, she also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and playing a good game of cards. She roamed the world with her travel besties, Georgette, Roxanne and Eddie and undoubtedly made the world a little brighter.
In addition to her children, she is survived by her 10 grandchildren; Marc, Matthew and Andrew Guerard; George, Henry, John and Emily Haggart, Sara Wargo; Natalie Zona and Nicole Sweatland; and one chosen granddaughter, Maryann Caskinette; 20 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild and several nieces, nephews along with many dear friends.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Valentine R. Doran, Jr., and a niece, Bette Anne Doran.
Phillips Memorial Home is honored to serve the family of Doris Haggart. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm; and Monday, February 5, 2024, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am with Rev. Mark Reilly presiding at Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews Street, Massena, NY.
Doris will be laid to rest in the spring at St. Lawrence Cemetery, North Lawrence at a date and time to be announced.
