Did you know October is both St. Lawrence County History Month and New York State History Month?
It’s a time to recognize the people, places and stories that have shaped our region and those working to preserve them.
In 2024, the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators passed a resolution officially designating October as St. Lawrence County History Month, recognizing the valued work of the County Historian, municipal historians, museums and historical organizations across the county.
History Month has taken on even more meaning in 2026 as St. Lawrence County commemorates America’s 250th anniversary.
Throughout October, the county’s 250th Commemorative Commission, the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce’s tourism office, and the St. Lawrence County Historian invite visitors near and far to explore the museums, historic sites, collections and local stories that connect the North Country’s past to the present.

Visitors explore informative exhibits at the Seaway Visitor Center at Eisenhower Lock.
More than 200 limited-edition STLC 250 commemorative coins will be given away across St. Lawrence County during the return of Open Doors to History (ODTH) from October 2–4. The 3 day event kicks off St. Lawrence County History Month and is part of the county’s year-long America 250 commemoration, featuring historic sites offering free and donation-based admission along with open houses, exhibits, tours, demonstrations and special programming.

Each location sets its own participating day, hours and activities, so visitors can choose one stop or build a history tour across the county.
The first 15 visitors at each participating location will receive a commemorative coin, giving visitors another reason to get out and explore the museums, historic buildings and collections found throughout the county.
After the coins have been distributed, visitors also have the chance to pick up an Open Doors to History sticker featuring Patriot Pete and Loyalist Lori while supplies last.
Visitors who sign in at participating locations will also be entered for a chance to win an STLC 250-themed prize basket filled with commemorative merchandise, local history books and contributions from participating partners including museum memberships and entry. The winner will be drawn and contacted October 16.
