North Country This Week
MASSENA -- The Town of Massena will seek $104,000 from the state to help establish a fishing school.
Linda McQuinn, who along with Don Meissner promotes Massena as a fishing destination, said they applied last year but were turned down.
The grant comes from the Empire State Development agency and is awarded through the Regional Economic Development Council.
If approved, the town would have to spend $26,000 before being awarded the $104,000.
"We scored very well at the local level," McQuinn told the Town Council on Wednesday. However, once the application reached Albany "it didn't score as favorably as we would have hoped ... we didn't put enough emphasis on the regional component. We really only looked at Massena."
"They're telling me if we create a better premise ... in terms of the regional concept and how it will benefit the North Country, they feel it will be successful," McQuinn said.
The application is due Friday, July 26, McQuinn said.
Councilor Tom Miller praised McQuinn's work toward the grant application.
"She's done her homework. She's found out what she needs to improve upon," he said.
