OGDENSBURG -- Shortly after 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Ogdensburg firefighters were dispatched to a report of a structure fire at an old cheese factory on Main Street.

Arriving on scene to heavy smoke conditions, firefighters requested a call of all off duty personnel and for Heuvelton firefighters to stand by at Ogdensburg station. Crews went to work gaining access to the body of fire and securing a water supply, according to a post from Ogdensburg Professional Firefighters Local 1799 on Facebook.

“Once off duty personnel arrived with the quint it was placed in service to access the weakened roof area over the fire,” the fire department said. “Crews pushed to the seat of the fire to find cardboard boxes filled with plastic covers burning.”

The fire, which is under investigation, was under control within an hour, firefighters said.

Heuvelton Fire, Ogdensburg Rescue, Ogdensburg Police and DPW, as well as state police and county Car 9 provided assistance.

The fire is under investigation.
