CANTON -- The Canton Sustainability Committee is seeking new members.

The committee advises and assists town and village boards and supports initiatives that promote sustainability, resiliency and environmentally sound municipal decision making.

Committee members typically reside or work in Canton. The main qualification is commitment to a healthy environment and a desire to work with others to that end. Students are welcome.

According to Village Trustee Carol Pynchon, “Canton’s Sustainability Committee is a great place to share ideas and get involved in making Canton a better, healthier, more sustainable place to live.”

The Sustainability Committee addresses issues related to food, energy, housing, transportation, waste, climate change and natural resource issues. Current committee focuses are on food waste diversion and composting; pedestrian and cyclist safety; reduction of plastic waste; organization of the Green Living Fair; Climate Smart Community certification; installation of EV charging stations; and continued exploration of energy-saving measures.

New York State offers funding to municipalities to address environmental issues. The Sustainability Committee needs people to help develop and implement these essential projects.

Sustainability Committee meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m., by Zoom until the COVID crisis passes and then in the Municipal Building (60 Main Street) board room. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 5. All are welcome.
