Brockport, NY – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team twice trimmed the deficit to one goal but a hat trick from Aidan Verbeke lifted visiting Brockport to a 4-2 win on Saturday evening in the Roos House.

The visitors opened the scoring at 4:58 of the first on the power play. After Josh Sova tried to clear the puck of the zone Brandon McMartin collected it at the point and fed a pass to Aidan Verbeke at the right circle. He fired a wrist shot through traffic past the glove of a screened Austin Washkurak.

The Roos (7-12-2) knotted the game at 1-1 at the 4:01 mark of the middle period. J.P. Langlois and David Hopfer cleared the puck off the far board where Kasey Kulczycki left a drop-off pass for Tyler Ralph in the neutral zone. Ralph went high over the blocker of Matt Schneider to tie the game.

The Golden Eagles (9-10-1) regained the lead just more than two minutes later when McMartin found Jake Taylor with a pass at the center of the right circle. He hit Verbeke at the far post as he one-timed the puck past Washkurak. Brockport took a two-goal advantage at 11:04 as Tim Kielich jammed the puck down the near boards and Connor Hutchins forced the puck to the far side of the ice. Verbeke took a shot from a short-angle position roofing it home for the 3-1 lead.

The Roos took advantage 17 seconds into a power play as Tyler Bullard fed the puck to Josh Sova below the right circle. He hit Ben Beasley in the high slot who roofed his third goal of the season over the shoulder of Schneider.

Brockport added a crucial insurance goal at 7:$5 of the third. Kielich found Hutchins on a cross-ice pass across the goal mouth as he roofed a shot past Josh Erickson. Taylor also earned a helper on the play.

Canton pulled the goalie with 1:32 remaining and had a 6-on-4 skater advantage after a Brockport penalty but after multiple close chances were unable to push the contest to a one score game.

Washkurak made 16 saves over the first 31 minutes, while Erickson turned aside four shots over the final 26:52. Schneider finished with 34 saves for Brockport as the Roos outshot the Golden Eagles, 36-24.

The men's hockey team hosts Fredonia for a weekend series next Friday and Saturday with puck dropping at 7 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
