The St. Lawrence University Nordic ski team completed competition at the 2012 Bates Carnival on Saturday in Rumford, ME. Senior Caroline Carpenter and first-year student Austin Meng led the Scarlet and Brown in the women's and men's 10k classic, respectively.
Carpenter was the top St. Lawrence finisher on Saturday in the women's race, as she recorded her fourth career top-20 finish with a time of 33:25.6, good for 19th place overall.
However, the Saints, who were without regular scorers Leah Hart and Amanda Moreland this weekend, struggled behind Carpenter. Rookie Kate Mulcahy and junior Kelsey Nichols rounded out the team scoring with 67th and 79th place finishes, respectively, to land the team in 10th place.
First-year student Emma Duffany (84th) and sophomores Bridget Shea-Gander (86th) and Ally Baier (DNF) also raced the 10k classic for St. Lawrence.
On the men's side, Meng recorded an impressive 21st place showing in only his second collegiate race with a time of 28:15.6. Thanks to top-30 finishes by both senior Adam Terko (26th) and sophomore Eric Lustgarten (29th), the Saints finished in sixth place overall with 67.0 points. Lustgarten's finish improved 10 places on his career-best showing entering the Bates Carnival.
Senior Teo Jackson was back in the line-up for St. Lawrence on Saturday, finishing 53rd in the 10k classic, followed by junior Connor Hunt (65th) and first-year Will Frielinghaus (71st). Also representing the Saints were rookies Austin Hart (81st) and Reed Likly (85th), sophomore Bill Prescott (98th) and first-years Adam Swayze (104th) and Evan Turner (DNF).
The St. Lawrence Nordic teams will be in action next weekend when they travel to the UNH Carnival on Friday and Saturday, January 27 and 28.
