Opinion: DuBray Baker seeking seat on Massena Town Council

To the Editor:

My name is Kristy DuBray Baker and I am writing to ask for your support on November 7th as I run for a seat on the Massena Town Council. I am committed to our community and believe this makes me an outstanding choice for this important role.

What sets me apart from others is that I have a deep connection to Massena. Born and raised here, I am now raising my own beautiful family in our town, with eight children between the ages of 10 and 17.

I am dedicated to personal growth, having earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from SUNY Canton, a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from SUNY Potsdam and I am currently in the process of earning my Master’s Degree in Child and Adolescent Psychology from Capella University, where I hold a 4.0 GPA. I am involved in my church, Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, where I assist with running the youth program “Kids Night Out”, a program dedicated to educating the youth in our area about important topics such as internet safety and the harmful effects of drug use. We also participate in community service projects such as creating and delivering Christmas care packages to the residents in the nursing homes and the annual Trunk or Treat event.

The well being of our community and its youth is of utmost importance to me and I am actively involved in the betterment of Massena. I started teaching dance when I was just 16 and quickly became the co-owner of The Gotta Dance Studio. I am currently a preschool teacher and have always had a passion for nurturing and educating young minds and hearts. While serving on the Massena Central School Board, I was able to actively be involved in pursuing that passion.

I am deeply dedicated to the growth and prosperity of Massena and envision the expansion of all of the resources that we have here. Our town boasts two campgrounds, two beaches, the Nature Center, Eisenhower Locks, Hawkins Point, and the beautiful St. Lawrence River. However, we lack decent movie theatre, bowling alleys, shopping options and have limited eateries. There is currently very little for the younger generation or tourists to do in the evenings and on weekends. Massena has the potential to be an incredible tourist attraction as well as a town that we all can be proud of. We have so much natural beauty and many recreational opportunities and I wholeheartedly believe that we can enhance our town’s appeal, creating a thriving and vibrant community for all.

On November 7th, I humbly ask for your support and your vote as I strive to enhance this beautiful town that I have called home for over 40 years. Together we can achieve great things and I look forward to serving the members of this community on the Massena Town Council.
