Stanley N. Matthie, 80, Madrid

MADRID -- The family of Stanley N. Matthie, age 80, formerly of Madrid, NY are saddened to report his passing early morning on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Ogdensburg, NY, where he had been a resident since 2017.

The arrangements are under the care and direction of the Phillips Memorial Home, in Madrid, NY.

Stan was born to the late Carl and Marjorie (Rowe) Matthie in Troy, NY on Christmas Day, 1943.

He attended schools in Potsdam, NY, and graduated from Potsdam High School in 1962.

He enlisted into the United States Marine Corp in 1962, served his country proudly, and was honorably discharged.

He married Sandra Coons on June 18, 1964 at the Chipman Church.

Stan was employed as a United States Border Patrol Agent in 1969 and later retired in 1994 as Patrol Agent in Charge, after 24 years of dedicated service. During his years of service, he recognized by the USBP for distinguishing acts in the line of duty.

After retiring, he operated the Coles Creek Marina with his wife for several years, and also worked as a contract security guard for the Ogdensburg Social Security office.

Stan was a member of the American Legion Post No. 109, several Bass Fishing Associations, and was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman.

In his younger years, he enjoyed playing golf and softball with local law enforcement teams. Stan enjoyed reading, old westerns and had a big personality.

Stan was also a member of the Ogdensburg Elks Lodge No. 772.

He is survived by a daughter, Patricia and Gabriel Martinez of Easton, PA; a son, Brian and Elizabeth of Norway, MI; a son, Jason and Sarah Matthie of Rensselear Falls, NY; grandchildren; Nicholas Matthie, Christian, Crystal, and Cameron Martinez, Zachary ,Tara and Finnegan Matthie; and several great-grandchildren, nephews and niece; Steven, Chris and Susan Matthie.

In addition to his parents, Stan was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Sandra M. Matthie in 2018, and a son, Michael in 1994 along with a brother Carl “Butch” Matthie, in 2021 and nephew David Matthie.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public viewing or funeral service.

There will be a small, private celebration of life for close family and invited friends at a later date.
