James E. Carkner, 64, Madrid

James E. Carkner, age 64, of Cogswell Corners Road, Madrid, passed away at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Fox & Murray Funeral Home.

Jim was born June 13, 1959, in Ogdensburg, NY, the son of Henry and Erma (Porteous) Carkner. He graduated from Madrid Waddington High School and his career included working on the family farm, Rural Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service, operating B&J Custom Lumber Sawmill, and working at North Country School Camp Treetops in Lake Placid.

Jim loved being on his tractor, working on his rock gardens, walking in the woods and quietly sitting with a book and cat on his lap. Jim married Joanne Smith at St. John’s Church in Madrid on October 14, 1989.

Jim is survived by his mother, Erma Carkner; his wife, Joanne Carkner; a son, Alex Carkner; sister, Melinda (William) Fisher of Madrid; sister in laws, Dorothy Carkner of Madrid, Virginia Carkner of Dedham, Massachusetts; a brother-in-law, Bruce Lester of Rensselaer Falls; and number nieces and nephews.

Jim was predeceased by his father, Henry Carkner; his brothers, William, Philip, and Richard Carkner; a sister, Cheryl Lester; and a niece, Theresa Carkner.

The family would like to give special thanks to Hospice and Palliative care of St. Lawrence Valley for the care and compassion they provided to Jim and his family.

Friends and family are welcome to visit on Tuesday January 2, 2023, from 3:00 PM- 5:00 PM at the family home 121 Cogswell Corners Road, Madrid, NY 13660. A graveside service will be held Wednesday January 3, 2023, at 12:00 PM (Noon) at Madrid Cemetery.
