Richard “Dick” G. Lockwood, 85, Ogdensburg

A Funeral Mass for Dick will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral.  Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Frary Funeral Home.  Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the Spring.  Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home.

Richard “Dick” G. Lockwood, 85, of Ogdensburg, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 11, 2024. Dick was born on August 2, 1938, to the late Charles “Smokey” and Tina (LaPlante) Lockwood. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sylvia (Lesperance) Lockwood; his children, Michael Lockwood and his wife Darla, of Chambersburg, PA, Karen Lockwood, of Ogdensburg, NY, Andrew Lockwood and his wife Christine, of Southampton, NY, Scott Lockwood and his wife Debi, of Plainfield, IL, Timothy Lockwood and his wife Kristin, of Cortland, NY, Matthew Lockwood and his wife Donna, of Dallas, TX, and Christopher Lockwood and his wife Nicole, of Frankfort, NY; his grandchildren, Kalee, Benjamin, Christian, Hana, Evan, Cameron, Nathan, Kim, Christie, Payton and Logan; his great grandchildren, Eleaner, Ada, Hazel, and Matthew; his brothers, Charles “Smokey” Lockwood and his wife Judy, and Thomas Lockwood and his wife Glenda, both of Florida; many nieces and nephews and his long time family friends, the Mastin Family, and numerous additional people whose friendships he treasured.



Dick graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1956 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in teaching in 1960 from Potsdam State.  Dick married Sylvia on November 14, 1959, at Notre Dame Church with Rev. Cyril Rapin presiding.  In 1960, he started his teaching career as a science and math teacher at John F. Kennedy Elementary School, later becoming Principal of Madill and Lincoln Elementary Schools.  Dick eventually took the position of Principal at the OFA Middle School where he retired in 1995 after 35 years.  In 1980, Dick became the Mayor of the City of Ogdensburg where he faithfully served the community for 20 years and earned the spot as the longest tenured Mayor of Ogdensburg.  He also served as President of the New York State Conference of Mayors as well as sitting on various local community boards and organizations. The Richard G. Lockwood Civic Center and Hockey Arena was dedicated in his name in 2001.



Dick enjoyed drinking his “cup of joe” on the dock, his daily walkabouts, and traveling to see his family. His many hobbies included woodworking in his shop, beekeeping and extracting honey and roasting his own coffee.  For several years Dick enjoyed working with his brothers on their hobby clamming business, Trebros Clamming, in Florida. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Donations in Dick’s memory can be made to the Richard E.
