Alma J. Dumas, 93, Massena

MASSENA -- Alma J. Dumas, 93, a longtime resident of Bayley Road, passed away Monday, February 5, 2024 at the North Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. For the past 5 years, she had been a resident of Farrar Home in Malone.

Alma was born on February 11, 1930, in North Bangor, the daughter of the late Rufus and Mildred (Martin) McElwain.

On June 6, 1953, she married Douglas A. Dumas at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in North Bangor with Rev. Gerald Kellogg, officiating. He predeceased her on February 28, 2020.

She worked for a time at JJ Newberry before beginning to work in the housekeeping department at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where she remained for 14 years.

Alma was a communicant of St. Mary’s/St. Joseph’s Church, Massena and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society there.

She enjoyed cooking and cleaning, gardening, and wintering in Florida for many years.

Alma is survived by her daughters, Brenda Marti of Houston and Debra Byington of Massena; her grandchildren, Chad (Lauren) Marti, Sarah (Eamonn) Coghlan, and Eric (Jen) Tyo of Massena; and her great grandchildren, Katelyn, Harrison, Caroline, Conor, and Molly.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by two grandchildren, Scott and Kari Tyo; her son-in-laws, Elroy Marti, Jr. and Gary Byington; and her brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Rita McElwain.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, however there will be no services at this time.

A graveside service will be held later in the year at Calvary Cemetery, Massena.

In lieu of flowers those wishing may consider memorial contributions to be made in her memory to Trinity Catholic School Endowment Fund.
