Thunderstorms could hit central and southern St. Lawrence County tonight

The southern and central areas of St. Lawrence County stand a good chance of heavy rain and thunderstorms tonight, the National Weather Service predicts.

They say Potsdam, Canton, Gouverneur and Star Lake have a 60 percent chance tonight. Temperatures are forecast in the low 70s today and dropping into the mid or low-60s this evening.

The front may pass the river communities, the NWS predicts. Massena stands a 40 percent chance of severe weather and Ogdensburg a 30 percent chance, meteorologists forecast.

Storms could continue through Tuesday, with Gouverneur, Ogdensburg and Canton looking at a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms, the NWS predicts. They estimate a 70 percent chance of thunderstorms on Tuesday night in most areas of St. Lawrence County, with an 80 percent chance down in the mountains.

The detailed forecast for Potsdam:

Tonight - A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. Southwest wind 9 to 14 mph. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday - A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 82. Southwest wind 9 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday night - Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. South wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday - A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8am, then a chance of showers between 8am and noon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 76. Southwest wind 11 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday night - A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 56. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday - A 30 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

Thursday night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 55. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Friday - Sunny, with a high near 77. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Sunday - A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 80. Southwest wind 3 to 5 mph.
