POTSDAM – Some of the new pavement on the refurbished bridges across the Raquette River will have to be torn up and redone in the spring.
“We do indeed have some issues with some of the paving materials,” said Michael Flick of the state Department of Transportation’s Region 7 office.
When the mix is “out of spec,” as was the case here, “sometimes those mistakes are caught at the plant and sometimes at the site,” Flick said.
“There will be no additional cost to the state,” Flick said. “It is something that will have to be resolved between the contractor and the supplier.”
Sometimes, Flick said, suppliers run into problems with materials they are preparing to “approved mix” specifications where, for instance, a buildup of dust in machinery can loosen and fall into the mix.
Except for the extra work in the spring, Flick said the $3.7 million project to refurbish the structures along Maple Street should be complete early next month.
